Watery Eyes |
Okay, my bwins have a watery eye condition, not allergies. I'm just wanting to know if anyone else has experienced this with their adopted children or if it is due to something else.
Their eyes seem to be light sensitive. Someone told me it was because they are blue. However, I know a lot of blue-eyed people who do not have this problem. Many times when they are exposed to a lot of light, their eyes water and it looks like they are crying. The skin around their eyes also turns red.
It doesn't seem to make a difference what kind of light it is. Sometimes while they are eating lunch and the sun is coming brightly through the living room window (faces the dining room), they have a very difficult time. Fluorescent and other kinds of light bulbs can also affect them. It also happens randomly, not every time. I like a lot of light in my house, but sometimes we have to dim the blinds for them.
Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas of the cause? The only guess I have is that they were in a dark orphanage without much light and their eyes aren't used to it. They've been here over a year though. Any suggestions/ reasons?
Update: The boys have eye doctor appointments on Monday. We have found possible FAS links. I'll let everyone know how it goes. |

my suggestion is to ask their doctor or to go online and look it up. sorry i wasn't more help, but I have never heard of this.

It could be a blue eye thing. The trusty husband has very blue eyes and his water a bit in the sunlight. The boy's are sensitive to light too. But mainly for them it is a squinty thing. But talk to an eye doc.

I have this problem, but it is just because I had eye surgery. I just have to wear my sunglasses whenever their is bright sun. It is awful for me to be outside without them. Perhaps you could give them each a pair of sunglasses with a strap to wear around their neck. It is actually good for your eyes to wear them.

I would have their eyes checked but blue eyes are usually more sensitive to light than darker colored eyes. I have blue eyes and I find it somewhat painful to be outside without my sunglasses.

Hmmm. Never heard of that. I have pale grey/blue eyes and I don't have that issue. That sounds more like an old wive's tale to me. I think that's definitely a question for a specialist!

Never heard of that either, but I'll keep them in prayer as you go on Monday. Hope it's nothing serious.

Yes, please let us know what the doctor says. Marina has blue eyes, and it is very possible that she has FAS/FAE. She has many of the facial features/behavioral issues associated with the disorder, but she has not been officially diagnosed. However, she doesn't seem to have sensitivity to light. I had not heard of a connection between the disorder and eye problems. I'm wondering now, if I should take extra precautions to avoid sunlight?

Hmmm. Well, if it turns out to be FAS-related feel free to give me a call. I have a big kid with FAE running around the house and will be happy to talk to you about it!

Rhonda from over at Worth the Wait had light issues with Bonnie when she first came home.... could it be from being institutionalized for so many years? Keep in mind that their part of the world received less amount of daylight, and is rather cold and dim during the winter...nothing to say of how much were they really out in the open?
All just food for thought....keep in mind I have not experience in this area, just my observation from blog world.
I too have blue eyes and they are really sensitive, but that has been diagnosed by the docs as the result of 1)my headaches that I have had since 4th grade 2)the non-threatening cyst that is in my sinus cavity close to my right eye. So, along with others, medical advice would be suggested.
