What to Wear
I need everyone's help out there. I'm trying to get everything together that we will need for our trip. I have started getting some things for the boys. I had not bought clothes, done the room, etc., for fear of losing them. However, since receiving our court date, I decided I better get busy. They really are coming home.

Anyway, here's what I need to know from all of you people who know a lot more about Russia than I do. What do Russians wear in the summertime? I need to know what adults wear and what children wear. What is acceptable? What is not? Do adults wear shorts, capris, sandals in the summer or do they stick with the long pants and the infamous "black shoes"? BTW, I'm with Jen-- no little black shoes. I wore a pair of black shoes, but they were comfy leather, no heels. I'm all about comfort when travelling- not style.

What about children? I know the babushkas will get you in the winter if they are not bundled with a jillion layers, but how about summer? Can they wear shorts and short-sleeved shirts?

I'm having trouble packing and don't want to be offensive to the culture. I need your help please. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!

I've never been to Russia myself, but I can tell you what types of clothes Peanut and his friends came with.

They all wore a tennis shoes, t-shirt and warm up suits for travel, which worked really well. (Layers, lightweight, comfortable.) They all had a pair of jeans, another t-shirt, a swimsuit, and a pair of sandals in their suitcases. I don't believe any of them brought shorts.

I don't know how indicitive that is of what kids typically wear.

I can tell you that the kids all loved wearing shorts and t-shirts. But the boys especially liked jersey-like shirts. I had a U of M basketball-type jersey and matching shorts that I could barely get Peanut out of. He adored his "footballka"

Kim, I don't have any wonderful advice here, but I can't wait to hear what you learn from this question.

Hopefully we will travel soon and I'm planning on wearing my capris.

The shoe thing has me boggled too. I lean a bit toward the stylishness but I don't want my dogs 'a barkin either. What to do, what to do?

From our experience last June the Russian women dressed much the same as in the spring. Like supermodels. Short skirts and super high healed shoes. Not the boots like when it was cooler. I don't remember what the children wore.

I wore light weight kahki type pants and solid colored stretch t-shirts and my Doc Marten sandals (with socks of course) I wouldn't worry about offending the Russians with your own dress, but I would worry about it with the children.

I have heard to dress them warmer than you would here and put them in layers. Then strip them down once you get in the car and away from the orphanage. I would guess that long light weight pants and t-shirts would be fine if it was warm. Just my best guess though. I have these same kinds of questions.

Kim...when I was in Russia last August for trip 1 of 3, my mother-in-law and I wore black or khaki capris almost every day. We wore comfortable sandals that did not show too much of our feet :) This last trip, my husband and I both wore our tennis shoes everywhere (except court). Granted, the Russians were usually wearing dress shoes or heels, but I didnt feel stared at or anything.

I am with Elle...I would bring layers. That is what we did with Roman and then took off stuff in the car. He mostly wore jeans or pants and t-shirts and then we had a long-sleeve shirt that he could take off. Granted it was April, so we still had to have him in a jacket and a hat. Although, we noticed in Moscow that many of the children were not wearing head coverings.

    hope this helps...gaye :)

To add a link go to the "help" top right corner when you are posting. Type in "how to add a link to my sidebar" and click on the first link. That should help you figure it out.

That is weird. I commented on this post yesterday, but I guess it didn't work because obviously my comment is not here. Blogger was acting weird.

Anyway, I just said that it is probably a good idea to not wear shorts so you don't stand out as a foreigner (tourist) too much and possibly become a target.

I am taking note of all of these great comment suggestions.
